Being a sunny day, Zane felt compelled to sit outside for a change. He did sit outside at times, when Preston decided to play ball with the other teamates. He was never one to join in, more than happy to sit around, relax and enjoy a good book. Any chance he had of studying, he'd take it. He knew Preston hated when he just sat around and watched. But did he really want Zane to get up there and make a fool out of himself, and even Preston? He knew Preston's friends didn't like Zane much. The only saving grace was that he was decent looking, and therefore they could use that to try and attract chicks. Some of them...Can just be said to not be known for their good looks.
Things just seemed different for Zane today. A lot had happened. Everything had changed, and everything he believed to be true, was only the beginning of something completely new. Al those things that go "gnarr!" in the dark...Really do go "gnarr!" Or at least something gnarly-sounding. It was a lot to take in, and he felt like being alone might help him take it all in. Who was he kidding? He was almost always sitting alone somewhere. Maybe what he did need was for someone to talk to about it. Preston perhaps, or Gemma herself. They had only spoken briefly since it happened, but he really didn't know what to say to her. What could he say to one evil-ass kicking hot girl? 'So...You going out to fight creatures of the night, tonight?' Urgh, he was hopeless at these kind of things.
Putting his feet closer to him on the soft grass, he opened a book. 'Sociology.' He couldn't even be bothered looking at this book right now. He sighed, before pulling another book out of his bag, which had pictures of vampires on the front. It was a kids storybook, but it was the only one he could find in the library. The public library that is...He didn't really need to make a fool of himself in borrowing this book in this school library. He began reading the pages slowly. Hide in the shadows...Weakened by sunlight...Evil creatures...Run from crosses...These were all things he already knew about them. And hey! Since when were kids books allowed to use the word 'evil?' That wasn't setting a very good example, now was it?

Rowan couldn’t clear his mind of the events of the weekend. He had spent it alone without seeing any of his friends and in the process had made a brand new friend, well maybe not a friend but the experience had shaken Rowan up considerably. He went to school the next day in an almost zombified state having spent a restless night in bed. Upon entering school he had managed to use autopilot through his chem. class as well as English but now he was facing the toughest challenge of the day: team sports.
It was shirts versus skins in the courtyard as Rowan went head to head with Preston in a no holds barred three-on-three matchup. Rowan had lost the coin toss and was forced to lead the skins team as he and his teammates disrobed in plain view of the majority of the school. Rowan would be lying if he said he didn’t like the attention however it was still embarrassing. Makeshift goalposts were made of their schoolbags as the game began. Rowan’s head clearly wasn’t in it as he played in the sweltering Miami midday sunshine. He made a few good plays and tackled but his team was losing pretty badly. He didn’t even like football, he preferred soccer, it made more sense, and you could be a lot more skilful with the ball as well. As his mind wondered he attempted a half assed throw that went severely off path, the ball spiked a few feet in front of where Zane was sitting.
”My bad.” he called as he raced across the courtyard and grabbed the ball from in front of Zane. “Sorry buddy, I didn’t mean to scare you.” he said with a smile as he knelt down to grab the ball, his eyes glanced to the book that Zane was looking at, the book displayed cartoon representations of vampires. He did a double take, why the hell was this brain box reading a kid’s book?
”So you make fun of me for checking out a demon website, and here I find you reading about vampires?” he says before tossing the ball back to his friends and signalling a time out. he bends over and snatches the book from Zane, ”I always had you pegged as a ‘Twihard’ but this seems beneath you Zane. ’Vampire’s don’t like garlic, so keep them away from hummus.’” he pulled a baffled expression as he held the book out for Zane to take back. His focus from reading the corny kids book was diverted as he felt the wind blow past him as a football nearly hit him in the head. Great. This was the only bad thing about deciding to hang out around this area, at one point or another you were bound to be hit in the head with a football. It was the unfortunate reality of having footballers hogging the outside area. He usually didn't mind when Preston was around because he wouldn't get hit, but the moment he was alone it was as if he had a "hit me I'm a loner!" sign plastered on the front of his head.
He glanced up, and sighed when he noticed it was Rowan who had thrown the ball. Of all people, it just had to be him, didn't it? He looked back down at his book casually as Rowan approached, before looking up with a brief smile when he spoke. "Hasn't playing football taught you how to throw a ball properly? Or was I just the target of the hour?" He questioned, though wouldn't be surprised if he had purposely tried to hit him. Then again, if that were true he would probably be knocked out right now. Say what you want about Rowan, he was a good footballer and a very good thrower. Preston went on about that a lot during their conversations. Zane tried to zone out, but he was barely successful.
He smiled casually as Rowan apologised. He seemed genuine, but it didn't make him less annoyed at Rowan. Maybe it was just everything which had happened in the past few days that has made him so on edge. He wasn't usually one to get caught up in thought over these things, but he believed being taken hostage by vampires and planned to be sacrificed counted as a traumatic experience.
He wondered how long it would take Rowan to nit pick his choice of readings. He hadn't hid it better under the other book, obviously. "Hey, I never made fun of your reading choices...I just subtly agreed with Christine." As he went on, Zane didn't look too amused. "Twihard? Come on, give me some credit at least. And sparkling vampires? That is so overrated. What ever happened to good ol' Drac..." He paused, sighly softly as he took back the book from Rowan, revealing a bandaged upper arm under his shirt. He didn't even want to question whether there was a Dracula or not, because everything he once thought was fiction appeared to be reality. Was there really a toothfairy and a santa too? Now that would be a good discovery...Not learning that blood sucking vampires are terrorising the town! "I was just bored and thought I'd read something different." He tried thinking of an excuse for his bandaged arm, because he knew Rowan would sniff that out too. It was a cooking burn! That nasty cooking....He was hopeless.

As Rowan stood in front of Zane he didn’t even notice that he eclipses the sun. His own shadow was splayed across the loner, leaving his peer in the shadows. He dropped to the ground thud, “I didn’t get much sleep last night.” he confided in Zane, he didn’t know Zane very well but Preston their mutual friend had assure Rowan that he was cool. Once you got to know him. Which; so far had been a rather laborious effort. ”I, met somebody at the weekend, it was . . . unreal.” he said after making the executive decision to not mention the magician, witch?. . . possibly a warlock the details were fuzzy.
Sitting on the warm grass he wondered if he should mention the dressing around Zane’s arm. He tried not to look but his curiosity was getting the best of him. ”You’re not scared of Dracula are you? He’s not Voldemort, he won’t show up when you say his name.” he teased oblivious to the fact Dracula did in fact exist, or that Zane had been attacked by a gang of vampires. Something he would later regret.
“Your arm looks pretty rough.” he said with a slight nod of the head towards his bandaged arm, “You’re not really the physical contact sport kind. What happened to you?” he asked genuinely interested.

Not getting much sleep must have been a trend going around, as Zane was feeling the same way. If there were signs of bags present under his eyes, then more than likely, bags were present under his eyes. Even he felt like he looked entirely shit this morning. He couldn't sleep at all, still having everything that had happened recently on his mind. He couldn't even study, or read. That was until today however. Was reading a kids book even classed as reading? Light reading, perhaps. "With all this lack of sleep going around, you'd think it was Christmas Eve or something and we were all anxiously awaiting the next morning, or hearing mysterious footsteps that night of Santa's arrival. And the sad thing? It never happened...But all the cookies were mischeviously gone." He sighed softly. He had always hated that. If he wasn't going to make a full appearence, he could've at least left one for Zane. They were nice cookies. And the bad part? The presents weren't always decent that morning anyway. His parents were never good at truly encompassing what he wanted. He only made like one hundred lists for them! Not too picky though...
"You met someone? On the Christmasy subject, it wasn't the chubby old fella himself, was it? All those cookies I left out for him, and he shows his face to you, but not me?" Zane seemed to overexagerate situations when he was feeling down, or moreso shocked and confused at everything that had happened. "But yeah...Thats good for you.." Showing that he did know what Rowan was really referring to. He did feel rather jealous for some reason of Rowan meeting someone. He didn't know why, but he somewhat resented him for always 'finding someone.' Zane wished he could be like that sometimes, but then he remembered he had met and got to know Aryanna. "That makes two of us then..." He stated softly, feeling the need to be competitive, just to make himself feel less jealous of Rowan getting what he wanted all the time. Even thinking of Arya made him feel uneasy, as he had been keeping distance lately because of what had happened. He couldn't even talk to her about it, which made matters worse.
"Of course not," he retorted to Rowan in relation to the Dracula comment. "But I like to keep my options open...You never know when he may show himself, or a Dracula wannabe will decide to terrorize Miami and kill everyone." How did he know either couldn't happen at some point, or even worse? "And anyway, Voldemort was rather scary back in the day...The whole dark cloak he had on, and the mysterious floating in the dark forest." He never had anyone to cuddle with as well, which didn't help matters too much.
Rowan had finally noticed his arm, which was something he was hopelessly trying to avoid happening. He couldn't outright tell him the truth, and the excuses he did have were sloppy and lame at the very least. "Oh uh...I scraped it when I was pulling apart an engine of an old car. No biggy." It was a perfectly reasonable explanation, but at the same time Zane felt uneasy in that Rowan now knew that Zane liked to get his hands dirty as a hobby. Hell, it might even be beneficial as he wouldn't think that Zane was a complete nerd. Why did he even care what Rowan thought? "And I may not be Mr. I love Sport, but I've had many sport related injuries, such as nearly getting my head knocked off by the bad pitching skills of a certain someone." He smirked softly, deciding to tease Rowan again.

“Anxiously awaiting something all right.” He said with a slightly foreboding tone to his voice. He couldn’t put his fingers on the pulse with what was wrong with the city but there was something that he couldn’t explain. An odd tension amongst the cities residents, odd weather patterns, disappearances and restaurants being destroyed. It was like the city of Miami was being used as a playground for something else. Maybe more mages, maybe something worse. He smiled, Zain’s take on the situation was far better than his own, after all Christmas was approaching faster than anybody had anticipated. He felt like he hadn’t had a break since he started the school year, maybe this was adding to his fatigue.
“No it was this guy.” he quickly corrected himself, ”Girl, eh her name was Jessica, she kind of blew my mind.” he said with a smile as Zane referred to his own girl. Preston had been fairly boastful in claiming his ‘bro’ had gone on a date with the new girl, which set the Miami High’s Gossip Mill into overdrive. They hooked up, she’s a slut possibly pregnant, and she had an affair with a teacher which is why her family left England in shame. The usual new girl thing, no doubt Paige had spread some of the nastier rumours, although there was never a paper trail when it came to gossip. Only hearsay. “So I hear you’re banging this new British girl.” he teased Zane back.
”No way you work on cars? That’s pretty cool.” he said in genuine admiration, “I always wanted to work with my dad on cars but he’s more into houses. See this scar here?” he said as he leant back and points a finger to a scar on his bare torso just bellow his belly button. “This is the result of a bored nine yearold playing with power tools while his dad was on the phone, I’m kind of lucky it wasn’t more serious.” he said with a smile. Maybe Zane was cooler than he was given credit for. “He still drags me to a building site anytime I’m free. He doesn’t want me to lose track of my roots. He doesn’t want me acting too privileged.”

For some odd reason, he just felt like spurting out 'vampires exist!' to Rowan, and talk to him about it. He was sure Rowan would think he was even more of a nutcase, and even if he did begin to believe him, he would be freaked out terribly...Something Zane didn't want to occur, mainly because Zane would feel guilty, not because Rowan was scared shitless. He just felt like he needed someone to talk to about things. It wasn't healthy to bottle things up, and oddly enough he was beginning to feel slightly comforted in speaking with Rowan. He wasn't as bad as he had made him out to be. It must have been this aura around Paige which made people different.
When Rowan mentioned 'guy' he became a little confused, until Rowan corrected himself. Although it was odd, he just gathered it was a stuff up. "Thats eh...Good." He faked a friendly smile. Why was Rowan even telling him this? Was it a way of gloating or something, because if so, he had Arya and she was beautiful and she was herself, which he highly doubted from this 'Jessica' chick. As Rowan mentioned Arya, Zane looked rather stunned. "Banging?" He chuckled softly, slightly nervous in talking about this. "We have only had a coffee...A harmless non-contact coffee with all our clothes on. Do people really bang over coffees these days? I don't know..." He wasn't up with all these formalities like Rowan was. Luckily for him, he doubted that Arya was either.
He nodded in response to Rowan's comment about his other hobby. It must be surprising to Rowan that he has any other hobby except reading and being a nerd. What surprised him however was that Rowan and himself seemed to have one interest in common, enjoying to work on cars. He looked on at Rowan's scar, cringing his lips slightly to show empathy. The boy was rather fit, obvious from all of his footballing, showing a great physique. Zane had a decent physique, but he wasn't able to compete with Rowan's, that was for sure. "You privilidged? Never." He spoke with a hint of sarchasm and a slightly nervous smirk. Its amazing how one night in being held by vampires helped him develop a semi-backbone and some nifty comebacks! Maybe he should get kidnapped more often!

One of the guys had shouted for Rowan to rejoin the game, he held up his hand gesturing for 5 more minutes, they began playfully tossing the ball around. He turned his attention back to Zane who was talking about Arya. He knew that Zane would have evaded the school gossip.“I mean banging after coffee, it isn’t classy but neither is the word ‘bang’.” he said with a smirk clearly enjoying Zane’s discomfort about the situation. “Who’ll babysit Preston now that you’ve got somebody else to occupy your time?”
He nodded, “I mean my dad has money but when every other rich kid was spending their summers at sports camps and stage school camps my dad would make me work with him, even if I wasn’t very useful he would always show me how to do things.” he smiled, his poor little rich boy routine clearly wasn’t working on Zane. Not that it should, a lot of kids didn’t go to camp it was always annoying how at the start of a new school year he would have to listen to all of his friends stories when all he did was measure things for his dad.
“Oh, you fight back now?” he teased as he rose to his feet again “I’ve gotta get back to my boys.” he said nodding his head to the players across the field. “You could join us if you liked, but I’m guessing you’re more into the books.” he smiled turning to jog away before turning his neck, ”See you around Zane.
