Oh bless me lord for I have sinned
It's been a lifetime since I last confessed
- Magicks - his years training to be a watcher and his time as one allowed him to learn a lot about and use magicks without much trouble at all. Especially in the last ten years, he has delved more into learning specifically for his own purposes.
- Languages - he is fluent in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin, Sumerian, Japanese, Russian and Mandarin. He has never had a problem learning new languages. At the very least he will know phrases to get by.
- Basic Armed and Unarmed Combat - He knows enough to protect himself from a fight against a mugger to an epic battle in a rainy alley somewhere, as well as knowing how to go about training a person in combat (he had a slayer once upon a time, after all). He's always been very good at kick-boxing and can use that to his advantage.
- Dedicated - He has always given one hundred percent to whatever he does. He follows through with promises and/or threats, finishes tasks he sets out to complete, etc.
- Perceptive - He watches the way people interact and picking up on the little nuances; sensing loyalties and personality traits, on if anyone is lying to him, etc. All of this he uses to his advantage.
WEAKNESSES
- Human - He has no supernatural healing, speed, strength or agility. He can be killed as easily as any other human.
- Cell Phones - Doesn't have one, doesn't want one, couldn't figure one out if his life depended on it. Not a typical weakness, but in this day and age, it is now.
- His Slayer - he was very close to his slayer, like a big brother to a little sister, and when her end came he did not handle it well. It will always be a soft spot with him and her death and the means by which she died is what kick-started his downward spiral.
- Curiosity - Some say it killed the cat, and the same could end up being true for him. His curiosity in walking down a darker path could very well get him killed in the future.
- Schizoid Personality Disorder (SPD) - after suffering a meltdown due to losing his slayer, a Council-appointed psychiatrist diagnosed him with SPD, which is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency toward a solitary lifestyle, secretiveness, and emotional coldness. SPD is not the same as schizophrenia, although they share some similar characteristics such as detachment or blunted affect.

Nick stands at an impressive 6'3" with broad shoulders and a general strong build, however he lacks any toned definition to what muscles he has. His hair is dark brown, full and slightly on the chaotic side, and he is fortunate that he hasn't noticed many grays popping up in his mane over the years. He has chocolate brown eyes, a decent tanned complexion and tends to wear suits that don't necessarily fit him properly. His excuse to wear clothes that are a bit more loose is that he feels comfortable and not constricted.
PERSONALITY
Nick is a complicated man. Once he was your typical Watcher type that did everything by the book, but then he attained himself a Slayer to guide and found his pretentious exterior falling down and that he cared very much for her well being, her safety and her feelings as well. Losing her was his downfall. Over the last decade, he has become very cold and closed off, a bit on the anti-social side. He tries his best to appear as if everything is hunky dory, but his lack of emotion about most things tends to break through. Some might just think he's guarded; someone who has had his heart broken and keeps others at bay to protect his heart from breaking again. Others might assume he's hiding something.
He is good at his job, and can be quite helpful, despite his bedside manner. He doesn't mind conversing with other people so long as he can sense they won't irritate him or get overly touchy feely about their feelings. He can have long conversations, but he's crap at small talk. It bores him and he'd rather saw his foot off, thankyouverymuch.
While he is not British like most Watchers, he spent several years in England and feels more like a Brit than an American. Especially so now that he lives in Miami. He was used to the colder, grayer climate, even though the warm, sunny one in the South of Florida is quite tantalizing. Like his adopted British compatriots, his wit is dry and full of aloof airs. He is not emotional (except that one time during his mental breakdown), is calm and collected, with a focused sense of self. He knows what he wants and he is going to go after it.

Then I scratched the surface
In the mouth of hell
Nick was born in 1966, the second of three sons to an American mother and an English father. He was born outside in Derbyshire and lived there the first three years of his life until his parents divorced just after the birth of his younger brother. His mother moved back to the States with all of her sons, to her hometown of Philadelphia where she soon remarried but Nick never truly took to his stepfather. He was always an amazing student and graduated the valedictorian of his high school in 1984 and was happy to learn his father had secured a place for him at Oxford University where he would study languages and literature.
He received his degree four years later and it was then his father informed him he was from a long line of Watchers on his paternal side. His father, Charles Sanford, was a member of the Watchers Council and wanted Nick to follow in his footsteps of training to be a Watcher. Nick learned the reason his parents divorced was because Charles had acquired a slayer and Nick's mother couldn't bare the time he spent away with "some young girl". Happy to oblige his father, he went on to train as a Watcher would, learning more languages, combat exercises, magicks. He was eventually given charge over a potential slayer named Yelena Pobedinskaya in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1998. He posed as an English professor at her school, waiting to see if she'd be called or not. Sure as shit, five months later, Yelena was activated and his official duties began.
It took some time for the two to find a niche with one another, but as soon as Yelena accepted her destiny she began to lean on and trust Nick with her life. He started to go against Council policy, looking at her as a sister and becoming attached but he knew he was training her well. However, all her training still couldn't help her when it came time for her Cruciamentum. She almost made it but in the end, was killed by the vampire she was locked away with. If that weren't hard enough to accept for Nick, it was learning his father had rigged it so that there was nothing available to a powerless Yelena. She was locked in a empty building with no weapons at her disposal all because Nick's father had assumed Nick and Yelena had become lovers and wanted to prevent any scandal and felt it best to be rid of the Slayer.
Nick couldn't handle Yelena's death and his father's betrayal, so his mind just snapped on him. He fell into a mental breakdown and couldn't deal with the smallest things around him. The council stepped in and forced him into a hospital to seek treatment with a Council-appointed psychiatrist who, after a good year of visits, deduced Nick had developed SPD.
When Nick was cleared to have a level head once more, the Council made sure his hospital time was no where to be found on personal records anywhere so that he could find work elsewhere if he wanted. He was offered a place with the Council but wanted to be nowhere near his father. He chose to travel the world, putting his years of learning languages to practical use, while also in search of something. He still carried his grief no matter how levelheaded he appeared and it was at the very core of him. Losing Yelena who had been as close as a sister to him and the betrayal that cut like a knife would never go away and instead made him a little more hollow. Perhaps a little dead on the inside.
After years of traveling and brushing up on his magical skills, he has finally located something that can prove fruitful to his secretive ambitions. And of all places its underneath a high school in Miami, Florida. Taking on a position as principal after his predecessor went missing, he is bidding his time to find a way to open the portal for what reasons are yet unknown.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Nick will be a cross between Buffy's Principal Woods and Giles but with Ripper's edge. He will be as picture perfect as he can as a Principal, helping students if need be, keeping teenagers in order and making sure the school doesn't burn down, but his motives will become questionable when he learns Cath is a Watcher as befriend her to gain access to her books on magicks and codexes and the like. When he learns there is a slayer in the midst it will be a surprise, and not necessarily a lovely one. He will have the potential in either redeeming himself once he goes too far down a dark path or becoming a future Big Bad after letting his past grief and betrayal consume him.

8 years | Just this one
A warm November breeze blew in off the ocean and into the window of Nick's principal's office; the hues from the setting sun casting dark pink and orange shadows upon the opposite wall and bathing the right side of his stoic face the light. His left was cloaked in otherwise general darkness of the office. School had been over four a few hours with the exception of after school extracurricular activities taking place here and there. Otherwise, the place was quiet and calm.
While inept when it came to cell phones, Nick was somehow able to maneuver around on a laptop just fine, as he stared at the screen before him, going over notes he'd typed up in regard to a text he'd found, on eBay of all places. He couldn't believe how careless the seller had been and apparently unaware of the important information and power within the book held. Not to mention it had to be about two or three centuries old. And Nick won the bid against only one other person, paying a mere $176.45 for it. To say it was a steal would be the understatement of the century.
Within the text mentioned allusions to a prophecy surrounding a great portal and a journey to be made before it could be opened. Nick was unsure if it was a literal, physical journey or a metaphoric one or whatnot. It was killing him that these ancient tomes always seemed to be so vague and enigmatic. Sometimes he just wished the authors would've have just gotten to the point with things like this, involving great power and magicks. Then again, it was probably why it was evasive. To keep average schmucks like the guy from Altoona who sold the book to Nick from accidentally unleashing some hellish bubonic plague or flocks of demons ready to eviscerate the general earthly population at the drop of a hat.
Leaning forward as the last rays of sunlight set below the horizon, Nick found himself completely consumed by darkness in his office, aside from the laptop screen glowing at him. He reached his right arm up and propped it up on the desk, placing his thumb and index finger on the bridge of his nose and closing his eyes tightly for a moment.
He sighed, too much on his mind. "Patience is a virtue," he muttered quietly, like a mantra, trying to assure himself that waiting his time for what he wanted to come to fruition would be well worth it in the end. "Patience...patience is a virtue."
